Disc Film Scan & Print

If your film looks like the one on the left side of the photo at the top of this page, please go to our Still Film Developing section.

This service brings your disc film negatives into the 21st century. We do not use vintage disc film printers. All disc film is first cleaned and scanned, then digitally enhanced and color corrected. You have the option of scans only or scans with prints. We do not offer "reprints only" as the digital step is required to ensure the highest quality. Process:

• Film is cleaned and scanned using digital dust removal technology (Digital Ice™). While most remaining dust and scratches are manually retouched, abnormally dirty or damaged discs will likely still have some distressing.
• Film is corrected for color and contrast, then are degrained and sharpened. While degraining does make for a smoother image we are conservative with its application. Too much degraining removes finer detail from the image.
• Film is scanned at 48 bit. This eliminates most if not all posterization* on particularly low contrast images.

Pricing

Please make a selection of one of the three following scanning options and specify your choice on our order form when ordering.

A. Standard Resolution Disc Film Scans (15% Crop)

• Images are 5.125 inches x 4 inches @ 300 DPI. JPEG only.
• The original negative frame is cropped about 15% to allow automated computer frame selection without frame lines. This is approximately the same amount the original vintage disc film printers would crop the image.
• Approximately 1.8 megabyte file per image.
• This service is all most customers need in order to get acceptable 4x5 prints.

B. Standard Resolution Disc Film Scans (Full Frame)

• Images are 5.125 inches x 4 inches @ 300 DPI. JPEG, TIFF or PSD. Please specify 24 or 48 bit when requesting TIFF or PSD.
• Image is manually cropped. This shows virtually 100% of the frame — more than what the original prints off the disc would have. Also helps to reduce film grain slightly.

C. High Resolution Disc Film Scans (Full Frame)

• Images are 10.25 inches x 8 inches @ 300 DPI. JPEG, TIFF or PSD. Please specify 24 or 48 bit when requesting TIFF or PSD.
• Image is manually cropped. This shows virtually 100% of the frame — more than what the original prints off the disc would have. Also helps to reduce film grain slightly.
• Approximately 5.3 megabytes file per image.
• For the budget conscious, please consider the standard resolution full frame scan (Option B). The resolution of these high-resolution scans significantly exceeds the resolving power of the very small disc frame. While this will allow for bigger blow-ups without aliasing (the little steppy blocks you see if you zoom in on a digital image), blow-ups any larger than 4x5 from a disc image lack apparent clarity regardless.

Turn Around Time

Work is done in regular six week cycles. Film for the next cycle must be in our hands before the beginning of the cycle. The next cycle starts on the following date:

April 1st, 2010

Orders received by this date will be shipped back within 4-6 weeks. Rush processing is available upon request.
